“Our inmates are very creative when it comes to thinking of new ways to smuggle contraband into prisons. It is a constant race that never ends”, says prison director Hans-Jürgen Stach. He has been working in prisons for 40 years and is currently responsible for 300 men that are imprisoned in the Halle prison in Eastern Germany. He read in the paper about rogue drones that carried drugs, mobile phones and even weapons into other correctional facilities in Germany and abroad, and decided he does not want to be behind the development, but dead even. This is why he had a DroneTracker installed at the prison in Halle in April 2015 that is now constantly monitoring the airspace above the most “vulnerable” side of the prison. This way he can be sure that no drone crosses the enormous fence unnoticed.
